- Multi-Domain & Multi-Tab Support: Playwright natively supports automation across different domains, origins, and multiple browser tabs/windows in a single test, which is a major limitation in Cypress's in-browser execution architecture.
- Out-of-Process WebSocket Architecture: Playwright communicates directly with browsers using internal debugging protocols (Chrome DevTools Protocol, etc.) over WebSockets, bypassing the proxy-based injection approach of Cypress. This results in faster, more reliable execution and zero interference with the page's runtime.
- Native Async & Event Loop Integration: Playwright scripts run in a standard Node.js/TypeScript (or Python) environment with native
async/awaitsyntax, avoiding the complex, chained custom promise queue of Cypress (cy.then,cy.wait). - Parallel Runtimes & Multi-Language Support: Playwright can run tests concurrently across multiple isolated browser contexts (Chromium, Firefox, WebKit) out of the box and supports multiple programming languages (JS/TS, Python, Go, Java, .NET).

- Modern APIs & Auto-Waiting: Playwright automatically waits for elements to be actionable (visible, attached, stable) before performing actions, drastically reducing flaky tests and boilerplate wait logic common in Selenium.
- Native Code-Gen & Trace Viewer: Playwright includes standard tools like
codegen(to record user actions) and the Trace Viewer (for step-by-step visual debugging with network logs and DOM snapshots) out of the box.
